Chapter 11
Betsy peered around the corner at a deep-in-thought Spencer. In his hand, he held the handkerchief sheâd given him months ago. His fingers caressed the soft fabric. Occasionally, he brought the embroidered square to his nose. Heâd kept it. Tears stung her eyes. Did that mean she was more than someone to pass the time with?
She stepped back to prevent anyone from spotting her spying and plastered her back to the wall. Had she been wrong on Thursday about him toying with her? Did she want him to look at her as anything other than a diversion? Sheâd avoided him since Thanksgiving, not giving him a chance to explain or cajole her with sugary words. Now, it was Sunday and time for her to escort him to the hospital.
âBye, Gloria, see you in a few hours.â Gloria was nowhere to be seen, but Betsy wanted to give Spencer warning that she was coming.
He stood when she entered the hotelâs foyer and shoved her handkerchief into his pocket. He crooked his arm with a smile. âReady?â
âYouâre chipper this morning.â She slipped her arm in his.
âI may have a surprise for you after my appointment.â
âReally?â Excitement leaped within her. âI love surprises.â
They chattered on the way to the train platform as if the emotions of Thursday had never happened, discussing the unusually cold weather and deep snow which continued to block the pass. They compared the uptight Mr. Dobson with the congenial Gloria, and laughed at the antics of the servicemen who passed through the doors of the hotel. By the time the train stopped so they could hitch a ride to Camp Carson, Betsyâs face hurt from grinning. Sheâd never enjoyed Spencerâs company more.
This was the companionship she craved. Time spent with a man who could make her laugh, who looked at her as if she were the only girl on the train, and listened to every word she spoke as if they held the utmost importance. The only problem with Spencer, or any soldier, treating her this way was the way her heart melted, and that would never do. Someday, God would send her a man to love that didnât wear a uniform. A man she could trust.
Sergeant Harris met her at the gate. âBetsy, Doctor, Iâve a bit of news for you.â
âGood news, I hope.â Betsy shifted the basket on her arm.
âLet me carry that for you.â He took the basket. âDr. Cleary has come down with pneumonia. While the doctor handling the wounded American soldiers is handling his appointments, the prisoners have suffered a bit from lack of attention.â He frowned down at her. âIâm afraid youâve a rather busy afternoon ahead of you.â
âI can handle hard work.â What would she find in the prisoner ward? Hopefully the nurses had been able to tend to the most important needs. âWeâd best hurry, then.â She turned to the silent man beside her. âSpencer, will you wait for me in the lobby?â
âOf course I will.â He tipped his hat at the sergeant and rushed away from them.
